CPSPTA was begun by people who benefited from the work of the American Association of Certified Sexual Addiction Specialists (AACCSAS). This organization provided certification for clinicians, coaches, and clergy who met a standard of excellence. The organization changed directions and sadly, closed in 2009. Many great service providers were left without the public recognition they deserve. CPSBPTA is formed under the direction of Allen Barnett and a team of certified clinicians, clergy, and coaches to make sure the work can continue. All team members are extensively trained in treatment or problematic sexual behavior and betrayal trauma. All certified specialists have been trained in the trauma model that was developed by Dr. Kevin Skinner in 2005. Others have come along since that time and further developed this model for treating partners, addicts, and families.

Clinical Counselors, Marriage & Family Therapists, Clinical Social Workers, Psychologists

We are committed to maintaining and upholding the same standards as the original AACCSAS. Specifically, clinicians who are certified have done rigorous training in treating problematic sexual behavior and betrayal trauma in partners and families. All training took place at a graduate level and/or was approved by national credentialing organizations such as NBCC, NAADAC, NASW, AAMFT, APA, or equivalent. Trainings that didn’t meet this standard did not count towards certification. In addition, clinicians had to be licensed in the state in which they practiced, complete an additional 125 hours of clinical experience, go through a minimum of 125 hours of case consultation/supervision, complete an application and submit a case study.

Clergy & Coaches

Pastoral counselors and coaches had to complete the same level of coursework or equivalent. All certified agreed to meet the standards of practice for clergy and coaches and not practice as mental health professionals. In addition to the application process, many were interviewed (after 2008) and passed a committee evaluation.
